Arsenal extended their impressive Premier League run against Liverpool as they made it four games unbeaten against the reds, recording back-to-back home wins in this fixture in the competition.
The Gunners headed into the clash on the back of consecutive wins against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest, finally putting behind them a poor run, which saw them record zero win in four straight games since a couple of days before Christmas.
Before the trip to Arsenal, Liverpool had just one league loss all season and are also fresh from a 4-1 humbling of Chelsea in midweek, which extended their winning run to four in the league. They also reached 21 unbeaten in all domestic competitions.
However, they were just not good enough when they faced Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday, and Arsenal took all the points to cut their lead to just two points.
How it happened in Arsenal – Liverpool
Mikel Arteta‘s Arsenal were at it again after overcoming Jurgen Klopp‘s red in the Emirates thanks to two second-half goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.
Bukayo Saka had given the Gunners an early lead but Liverpool found themselves level out of nothing just before the interval, as William Saliba lost concentration to allow Luis Diaz nick the ball off the arm of Gabriel and into the net for 1-1.
Liverpool had no shot on target in that first-half but finished it level, despite being second best all night long. However, Arsenal got their noses back in front in the same vein as Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker were involved in an awkward moment, which allowed Gabriel Martinelli fire into the empty net.
A Gabriel’s long ball forced a misunderstanding between the Liverpool duo, who both completely left the ball moving, with a lurking Martinelli scoring one of the easiest goals he’ll get in the 67th minute.
Leandro Trossard came off the bench to continue his impressive record against Liverpool by addding a third deep into added time and after Liverpool had been reduced to 10 men with Ibrahima Konate getting a second yellow.
Jamie Carragher and Garry Neville criticze Arsenal celebration
Arsenal players celebrated wild at full time and this has not impressed the former Premier League duo.Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was not impressed with Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard for taking pictures of the club’s photographer Stuart MacFarlane.
“Just get down the tunnel, you’ve won a game, it’s three points… You’ve been brilliant, you’re back in the title race. Get down the tunnel.” said the 46-year-old.
Former Manchester United man Garry Neville also added: “I think there was a little bit of immaturity in Arsenal’s celebrations. He (Mikel Arteta) is achieving maximum with this team. I think he can’t achieve anymore.”
Arsenal has been criticized in several occasions for excessively celebrating but it is obvious the Gunnrrs will not change their ways.
Arsenal move to second on the Premier League, ahead of Manchester City who plays away to Brentford on Mondy evening.
