A regional court in Spain’s Catalonia region has on Thursday passed judgment on Dani Alves for raping a woman in the restroom of a Barcelona nightclub on the eve of the new year, December 2022.

Following his arrest in January 2023, the 40-year-old was convicted despite pleading not guilty to the rape charge leveled against him, but evidence showed the player had raped a 23-year-old woman, according to the court.

While in prison for more than a year before the judgement was passed, the Brazilian continuously changed his story, with his wife Joana Sanz, also saying Dani Alves had appeared very drunk when he got back to their Barcelona home the night of the rape and had bumped into furniture before collapsing on the bed.

Dani Alves, in one of his confessions, also claimed that they had had consensual sex. “We were both enjoying ourselves,” he alleged.

Unfortunately, none of these was enough to convince the court because the prosecutor also argued that Dani Alves lured one of the women in a group of three to the restroom from their VIP table.

Someone believed to be under the influence of alcohol could not have done that, and it was there he turned violent and took the woman against her wish, the prosecutor argued.

“The sentence considers it has been proven that the victim did not consent, and that there is evidence, in addition to the testimony of the plaintiff, to consider the rape proven,” the court said in a statement.

The plaintiff’s attorneys had requested a 12 year jail term for the former Barcelona man while the public prosecutors demanded a nine-year sentence.

In the end, Dani Alves, who made more than 400 appearances for Barcelona over two spells, was sentenced to a four-and-a-half-year prison term and told to pay 150,000 euros to the victim.

It is also reported that the family of his countryman and former teammate at Barcelona and PSG Paris Saint-German, Neymar, has taken care of the fine.

Once his prison term ends, Dani Alves will be under probation for five years, which includes supervised communication with the victim.

Aftermath of Dani Alves’ conviction

The fallout from Alves’ conviction extends far beyond the confines of the courtroom. As fans, teammates, and stakeholders grapple with the news, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the complexities and challenges faced by athletes in the modern era.

As Dani Alves embarks on a new chapter marked by uncertainty and adversity, the footballing world watches with bated breath. While the road ahead may be fraught with challenges, it is also an opportunity for reflection, redemption, and personal growth.

Alves was once the most decorated football player in history before being overtaken by former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi, and his story serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of fame and the complexities of human nature.

Whether Dani Alves emerges from this ordeal as a fallen hero or a symbol of resilience remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Dani Alves’ journey is a lesson that persons with fame are not saints.
