Manchester United are on the verge of completing a two-year deal to bring Edison Cavani on a free transfer to the theatre of dreams to bolster their attacking prowess, but what can we expect from the Uruguayan talisman as the club have been let down by his like players in the past.
The Premier League club have signed Radamel Falcao and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, both who can be considered world class attackers at that time but failed to establish themselves at the club for long-term.
Colombian talisman Radamel Falcao arrived at Manchester United ahead of the 2014-15 season from Monaco on a season-long loan with an option to buy but the striker did not live up to the hype and United turned down the buying option after scoring just four goals in 29 outings all season.
For Zlatan Ibrahimovic, it was a successful spell but for injuries. The Swedish arrived on a free transfer before the start of the 2016-17 season on a year contract with option of extension depending on performances and Ibrahimović never disappointed.
However, his time with United was affected by injuries yet he managed 29 goals in 53 appearances across all competitions before terminating his contract in March 2018 as he heads for the MLS.
This summer, having failed in their attempt to sign English youngest Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, United turned to Edinson Cavani on What look like a panic buy since the player was never in their plans this summer.
The former Napoli forward has been without a club since leaving Paris Saint-Germain at the end of June when his contract with the French club runs out and moves to Benfica and Atletico Madrid failed to materialise due to agent conditions.
Cavani is no doubt a striker of the like of the former Manchester United flops but with the current crop of players at the club and the player not know for injuries, they could be about to get a decision which had backfired in the past right this time around.
At 33, Cavani seems a short term options to add something unique to Manchester United attack and one the club can afford now, much has been said into lack of depth in United’s attack. Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial and now the club have a veteran they can call upon Cavani to stir a bit of competition, also a massive upgrade on Odion Ighalo, who will be joining his parent Club in January.
Cavani’s numbers are ridiculously good (PSG all time highest goal scorer) plus getting him for free is even a good one for the Club. Edinson Cavani has scored 341 goals in 556 club games, this is the type of stats you expect from a world class striker. He will add a different, high-calibre option to United’s attack, his experience and leadership trait will be a bonus for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
Even as it looks the deal is more of a panic buy and his wages is high, Edison Cavani is a player Manchester United fans should watch out for and have all it takes to succeed at Manchester United.
