The Ghana Football Association has taken a massive risk by dismissing Otto Addo just weeks before the 2026 World Cup, prioritizing a halt to a four-game losing streak over managerial continuity.
Otto Addo has been fired as Ghana’s Black Stars head coach 72 days before their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against Panama following a run of four straight losses in the build-up to the tournament.
The former international attacker, appointed for a second stint in March 2024 after previously becoming the first to play and coach the national team during his first stint as interim boss in 2022, when he helped them reach the Qatar FIFA World Cup.
Time under the 50-year-old has been filled with ups and downs, with the Black Stars failing to qualify for the last AFCON tournament, while they suffered a group exit in the 2023 edition under his watch.
However, they enjoyed a completely different fortune in the World Cup qualifiers, winning eight and drawing one of ten games to finish top of the standings with 25 points, six ahead of second-place Madagascar, and thus reach the global showpiece for a fifth time.

Ghana has failed to win a game since the end of the qualifiers, with all four games in that period ending in defeats against Japan, South Korea, Austria, and Germany, a run that has become a worry for the Federation.
Sacking Otto Addo seems as desperate as it is the right decision, but with friendlies scheduled against Mexico and Wales in the World Cup window, a new coach will have the opportunity to test his players before the tournament.
What sacking Otto Addo means for Ghana?
The decision to part company with Otto Addo will affect the players more, as their chances of making the FIFA World Cup squad have now been blown open, with almost everyone now having to fight for their spot.
It presents a clean slate environment for players who have been impressive with their clubs but have been on the fence looking in.
Even though a new coach would not want to make many alterations to avoid complications, a player in form is always worth the risk.It also means less time to get acquainted with the players and instill your favorite play patterns.
This decision could mean advantage for their opponents due to the limit time preparation for the new coach, after all the games against Mexico and Wales is just 180 minutes to decide on 26 man squad.

At the same time, the unpredictability could also play into their favour.
Playing Panama in their first game is a great opportunity, but it is also as delicate as they should get it wrong, because that match represents their best chance of knockout qualification.
For Otto Addo, he missed the chance to become the first coach to lead the Black Stars into two different World Cup finals, after managing the team at the 2022 edition in Qatar, where they finished bottom of Group H with three points.
