The Netherlands get their FIFA World Cup campaign off to a flyer following a 2-0 win thanks to two late goals from Cody Gakpo and substitute, Davy Klaassen.
The Lions of Teranga proved up to the task for most part of the match but were too shy keeping discipline in defence, hence their inability to capitalize on the Dutch’s defensive slip ups.
The had the only two shots on target heading into the last ten minutes but six minutes from the end of normal time, Cody Gakpo connects with a Frenkie De Jong pass to head past Edouard Mendy for 1-0 Netherlands.
The second came deep into injury time on the counter after Senegal push men forward in search of an equaliser.
Memphis Depay’s shot on goal was parried by Mendy, who should have done better and to add to his frustration, Davy Klaassen was first to it and the Ajax midfielder only touched it into the back of the net.
2-0 The Netherlands won and move three points, level with Ecuador, who beat host nation, Qatar on Sunday.
Louis van Gaal can now rest assured of securing passage into the next round and will be much easier to do so as group winners while for Senegal it is not all game over as winning their next two games, which they are favourites will be enough for a place in the last 16.
