Real Madrid sees off Atletico in an eight goal thriller to earn the ticke to the final of the Spanish Super Cup, where they’ll face the winner of the clash between Barcelona and Osasuna on Thursday.

The Madrid derby was very much anticipated as Atletico remains the only side to have beaten Los Blancos across all competitions this season after 26 games across all competitions.

A 3-1 win for Diego Simeone’s minions back in September dealt a huge blow to Real Madrid, who dropped points for the first time this season and suffered a first derby loss since May 2022.

How it happened in Riyadh

On the nigt in Riyadh, Los Colchoneros got off to a perfect start as Mario Hermoso headed them in front from an Antoine Griezmann corner in the sixth minute, moment after Kepa had denied Samuel Lino with a fine save.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men responded in the same style as Antonio Rudiger headed home from a Luka Modric corner in the 20th minute for his fourth Madrid goal and his second in as many games.

For the first time on the night, Los Blancos took the lead just before the half-hour mark as Ferland Mendy stylishly divert a Dani Carvajal low cross into the back of the net, leaving Jan Oblak in no man’s land.

Eight minutes later, Antoine Griezmann produced an absolute stunner to make history as he overtakes Luis Aragones to become Atlético Madrid’s all-time leading Goalscorer with his 174th for the club.

It ended two-all at the interval and 12 minutes from time, Atlético retook the lead in an awkward circumstance as the ball came off Antonio Rudiger and into the net following a Kepa howler.

Atletico Madrid players celebrate Mario Hermoso opener vs. Real Madrid in Spanish Super Cup semi-final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Dani Carvajal leveled matters at 3-3 with less than six minutes of normal time left to play as the game headed into extra time.

Super Cup final next for Real Madrid

Twelve-time winners of the Spanish Super Cup Real Madrid became too good for their tired rivals and a Stefan Savic own goal four minutes to the end of the second-half extra time gave them the edge, after which substitute Brahim Diaz scored with the last kick of the night to take the game beyond Atletico.

Madrid lost 3-1 to Barcelona in the previous final and will have their chance for redemption if Xavi’s side reach the final, else they will face an Osasuna side whom they’ve not lost to in 19 meetings.

Super Cup final will come up on the evening of Sunday January 14th, in the same venue, Al Awal Park in Riyadh.

A deja vu for Atletico

Diego Simeone’s Atletico has now suffered another one of what has become a customary loss to Real Madrid in the last ten years, in which they have lost to Madrid in ;

• UEFA Champions League finals (twice)

• Two UEFA Champions League knockout rounds

• Spanish Super Cup in two different editions

• One Copa del Rey knockout round
