In the late hours of Thursday, Bayern Munich made a shocking decision as new broke about the Bavarians parting ways with Manager, Julian Nagelsmann, 20 months following his appointment.
The German, who had been the club manager since he replaced Hansi Flick in the summer of 2021 helped them to the league title last season but suffered elimination in the Champions League quarter finals, to Villarreal.
While the club continued to give verbal support until the last minute, there have been concerns over his ability to take the club forward and club felt their goal for the remainder of the could be at risk, hence, his sacking.
Nagelsmann himself had complained about lack of support from the club, highlighting their inability to replace Robert Lewandowski after the striker departed for Barcelona in the summer.
Club and fans have also criticized Nagelsmann of his tactics, which they believed has costed them twelve points in the Bundesliga this year, hence their inability to blow Dortmund away in the race for the league title.
Bayern already have a place in the Champions League last eight, where they’ll face Manchester City over two legs and the management had doubt about the 35year old’s willpower to come through.
Former Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel has been appointed with immediate effect. Tuchel, who was a former Dortmund boss will now go head to head against his former side for the league title.
A Champions League winner at Chelsea, he’ll face the team he beat in the final in 2021 to get Bayern the ticket to the last four.
Nagelsmann managed Bayern 84 times, recording 60 wins and ten defeats.
Under his tutelage, the Bavarians scored 255 goals and conceded 84 times, averaging 2.31 points and three goals per game.
He has in the past been linked with Real Madrid and the Spanish giants could now rejuvenate their interest, with the continuous criticism of Carlo Ancelotti and his link with the Brazil National Team.
Speaking in 2021, Nagelsmann said:
“I received a call, two years ago, from Real Madrid, they wanted to know me and my philosophy better. If they call me again in the future, the decision might be different. Back then, I didn’t have time to prepare, learn Spanish & and lack the experience.”
Maybe now, the time is right for him to finally embrace the call if Real Madrid do come calling. An interesting summer awaits.
Nagelsmann’s departure has been confirmed and the former RB Leipzig manager will arrive at the club today having not shown up in training this week.
The contract, which was supposed to run until 2026 will be terminated, and both parties can then go their separate ways.
