Why Chelsea wants to sell Conor Gallagher is a topic that does not sit well with many of the club’s faithfuls as the player already proves himself worthy of being at the club.
Conor Gallagher is a personality that divides opinions at Chelsea, given that he was not convincing in his first full season with the club.
The Englishman midfielder returned to Chelsea following a successful loan spell at Crystal Palace, where he finished the 2021-22 season as one of the best youngsters in the Premier League.
To add to his achievement for that season, Conor Gallagher was named Palace’s Player of the Season after scoring eight goals and adding five assists in 39 games across all competitions.
Unfortunately, he could not replicate the form in a struggling Chelsea side under Graham Potter in the 2022-23 season. Albeit he won the club’s goal of the season with a wonderful curling late winner against Palace earlier in the campaign.
Why Chelsea wants to sell Conor Gallagher
In the 2023-24 season, despite the arrival of some top midfielders at the club, it was Conor Gallagher who stood out the most amongst his peers.
Aside the sensational Cole Palmer, who had a beyond ordinary debut season at Chelsea following his move from Manchester City late last summer, no other player of the club was better than Gallagher in the season.
His availability is also an added asset for the club. Conor Gallagher played 50 out of Chelsea’s 52 games across all competitions, more than any other player at the club.
He also became more productive in front of goal, with seven goals and nine assists – setting a new personal best for goal involvements in a season.
However, despite his impressive form, fans continue to wonder why one of the club’s most reliable midfielder is continually linked with a move away from the club.
Why Chelsea wants to sell Conor Gallagher
Speaking on the future of the midfielder amidst speculations of a move away before the turn of the year, former Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino said; “He’s important because of Chelsea values,” Pochettino said. “He’s a product that came from the academy. Of course he loves the club and he’s very committed.
“You can see on the pitch: he runs, he play, he fights. He does everything to try to win. Yes, I think he is a really important player, always the type of player that the coaching staff want, and the team.” Unfortunately, Chelsea may be left with no choice on the matter.
Chelsea is currently under the lights of the FA for possible financial breaches. Although the club has repeatedly denied any issues in complying with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
The Blues pointed out around £400 million it earned through player transfers to partially offset the £1 billion outlay. It has very few players who they could transfer for pure profit under PSR regulations to fund future spending.
With Reece James constantly getting injured, Conor Gallagher represents the only player which the club can sell for pure profit as he is home-grown.
This is also why Chelsea valued him at £50 million even when it appeared it is not a realistic amount for any buying club.Conor Gallagher has become an integral part of the set-up at Chelsea, earning his spot in the starting XI despite the presence of players signed for big fees.
Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Romeo Lavia, Lesley Ugochukwu and a few others are midfielder options for Chelsea should they have no other option than to put Gallagher up for sale.
It may be a decision that upset the fans but to save their own skin from a potential punishment for their excessive spending, and rescue the future of the club, Chelsea may be forced to let go of one of their best players, even if only a rival club can afford him.
