After the completion of the group stages in the ongoing Women African Cup of Nations in Morocco, here’s a narrative of the journey so far.
Group A
Burkina Faso 2-2 Uganda
A dramatic first half produced four goals and a red card saw Burkina Faso and Uganda end their participation in the Women AFCON after the spoils was shared in a 2-2 draw.
Margret Kunihira gave Uganda an eighth minute lead and Madinatou Rouamba was sent off for Burkina Faso.
However, it was the 10 women who strike next as Adama Congo restored parity just five minutes after the half hour mark but Uganda were back in front just after three minutes, as Sandra Nabweteme hit back to help the East Africans put their noses in front for the second time in the match.
The last goal of the game came four minutes before the end of the first half. Noami Adele Kabre made it 2-2 and both exit the competition after recording just a point each from their three group games.
Morocco 1-0 Senegal
Morocco leapfrog Senegal to the top of Group A standing following a 1-0 win over their direct rival on Friday evening.
Captain Ghizlane Chebbak scored five minutes before the hour mark to seal the win which ensured they finished top of the group on nine points, followed by Senegal on six.
Group B
Zambia 4-1 Togo
Zambia thrashed Togo by four goals to one to seal top place finish in group B with seven points from three games. Despite losing their captain and best player, Banda Barbra before the start of the competition as well as drawing their first game.
Lushomo Mweemba lost a third minute penalty to open the scoring for Zambia but the opening goal did came in the 15th minute as Grace Chanda scored her first goal of the competition this year.
Five minutes later, Ireen Lungu doubled Zambia’s lead before Afi Apeafa Woedikou halved the deficit with her second goal of the competition five minutes after the half hour mark.
However, Xiomara Mapepa restored Zambia’s two goal lead five minutes to the break before Grace Chanda completed her brace on the hour mark to seal a convincing 4-1 win for Zambia.
Cameron 2-0 Tunisia
Cameroon earned their first win of the competition following a 2-0 win over Tunisia, who suffered back to back loss in the competition.
Goals from Michaela Abam and Njoya Ajara Nchout at the start and the end of the game respectively helped secured the win which took them five points and up to second place in the group.
Tunisia also qualify as one of the best third place teams.
Group C
Nigeria 4-0 Burundi
Defending Champion, Nigeria made it back to back win with an astonishing 4-0 win in a dominant display against Burundi.
Uchenna Kanu bagged a brace while Rasheedat Ajibade and Peace Efih are also among the goals as the Super Falcons secured qualification while Burundi exit the competition with no point recorded from three games.
South Africa 1-0 Botswana
80th minute goal from Nthabiseng Majiya means South Africa made it three wins from three as they finished top of the group.
Botswana also qualify as one of the best third place teams.
