Why West Ham United resent Declan Rice’s success at Arsenal?

As the floodlights of the London Stadium flicker to life this Sunday evening, the atmosphere will be thick with tension that transcends the typical Premier League title race, in a match involving a team fighting relegation and another that has just booked their place in the Champions League final, and looking to close the league title.

West Ham United’s former hero, Declan Rice, once again returns in an Arsenal shirt in what is more than just a homecoming, but a psychological battleground for a fan base that remains deeply divided over how to remember their most decorated modern player.

On paper, the relationship should be one of mutual adoration because Declan Rice arrived at Chadwell Heath as a Chelsea cast-off, rose through the ranks to become the club’s youngest-ever captain, leading them to a European trophy.

He then departed for a record-breaking £100 million fee that funded a significant squad overhaul. Yet, as he chases the Premier League title with their cross-town rival, the rhetoric from the East End is far from universally celebratory.

West Ham United fans have shown their resentment towards Rice since his move to Arsenal, and even claim satisfaction for the defeats that ultimately denied his league coronation in each of the last two seasons.

As the Premier League leaders look to press their advantage after Manchester City’s recent slump, West Ham United fans will hope to deny them, not just for the good of their relegation fight, but to prevent a Declan Rice success with them.

The resentment harbored by some West Ham supporters toward Declan Rice is not born of logic, but of the unique, tribal heartache that defines the game of football or any sport.

For years, Hammers fans acted as Rice’s shield, fiercely defending him against the media narrative that he was not world-class, and would have to leave West Ham and work his magic at the top level to be taken seriously.

At the club, there was a collective hope that they could grow with him, especially after the historic night in Prague, where they lifted the Europa Conference League trophy, their first major title in over 40 years.

However, when he finally made the move to North London, that hope was dashed, Rice’s departure was a public concession that their club, despite the silverware and new stadium, is still viewed by the elite as a stepping stone club.

To celebrate his wins elsewhere is to accept that their peak was merely his starting point, and for any fan, that would be the last thing to accept, even if it is a reality, especially with Arsenal not winning a major trophy in years.

The manner of Declan Rice’s departure, while professional, carried a subtle sting of elitism that fans are quick to weaponize. He has been refreshingly honest about his desire to play in the Champions League and compete for the highest honors.

While a rational observer sees this as the natural ambition of a player who has been categorized as world-class and has clearly exceeded the mid-table orbit, a supporter of West Ham views it differently.

When fans get emotional, players’ ambition is often translated as disloyalty, and there is always a sense among the skeptics that Rice didn’t just leave for a new job, he left for a different social class.

Hearing him speak about finally playing in big games feels like a slight against the 245 appearances he made in Claret and Blue, some of which were top European ties, especially in his final season.

Why City Would Have Been more Acceptable than Arsenal?

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of this transfer is the rejection of Manchester City. It is well-documented that the Cityzens were prepared to compete financially, yet Rice opted to fulfil his dreams at the Emirates.

While this speaks to his desire for a specific project, work under Mikel Arteta, and continue to live a London-based lifestyle, it perversely fueled the traitor narrative amongst the West Ham faithful.

To many in East London, joining the Manchester City machine was seen as an inevitability, since it is a club where success is guaranteed but sterile, and Pep Guardiola’s team were fresh from winning three consecutive Premier League titles.

Joining Arsenal, however, felt personal. Arsenal and West Ham United share a geography and a history of local friction. Seeing their captain level up within the same city makes his success more visible, more constant, and ultimately more painful to endure.

Is the West Ham hate on Declan Rice justified?

The question of whether the West Ham faithful are justified in their cold shoulder toward Declan Rice is one of the most heated debates in London pubs today.

From a purely emotional standpoint, fans feel their hate, or more accurately, their resentment, is a byproduct of broken trust. To them, Rice was the standard-bearer, the one player who was supposed to prove that you didn’t need to join a bigger club to achieve greatness.

By leaving, he didn’t just vacate a position on the pitch, he punctured a dream that West Ham could break the glass ceiling of the English game.

However, when you strip away the tribalism and look at the cold, hard facts of the situation, the argument for hating Rice begins to crumble. In reality, the vitriol directed his way is not only harsh but fundamentally misplaced.

What does Declan Rice think of West Ham?

Speaking to Amazon after Arsenal beat Atlético Madrid to seal their UEFA Champions League final spot on Tuesday night, the England international only has good words to say about the Hammers and even spared a thought for their current predicament.

“It’s a club that gave me everything, said Rice. Without West Ham, there’s no me. I honestly believe that. They gave me a chance when Chelsea didn’t.

“A lot of people there really did push me on. Moyes, Bilic, and Pellegrini made me captain. There are loads of good things about that club.

“It’s not nice to see the position they are in, but it’s football and I have a job to do. We’re trying to win a Premier League title. May the best team win.”

A Conflict of Legacy

Ultimately, the desire to see Declan Rice stumble is a form of emotional self-preservation for West Ham United fans, because his success at Arsenal validates the idea that West Ham was holding him back.

If Declan Rice lifts the Premier League trophy with Arsenal, it confirms the uncomfortable truth that he was right to leave, as they are now battling relegation and could be sent down to the Championship with a loss on Sunday.

For the fans who once saw him as one of their own and watched him lift the Conference League title three years ago with the promise of more to come, that is a reality they aren’t quite ready to accept.

On Sunday, they won’t be rooting against the man who won them their first major title in 40 years, but against the idea that their club’s greatest modern moment was merely a prologue to a rival’s glory.
