Chelsea set for possible FA sanction after the team picked up more than six yellow cards during the weekend’s win over Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Christopher Nkunku scored a late winner from a Jadon Sancho assist to help The Blues pick up their second league win of the campaign, while also keeping their first clean sheet away in the competition in almost a year.

Chelsea, picked up eight yellow cards in the fixture that sets a new Premier League record for most bookings in a single game, with their host Bournemouth also victim of the same offence after picking up six of the remaining 14.

Chelsea set for possible FA sanction

Under FA regulations, clubs are liable to face sanctions if they receive six or more yellow cards during a single match, as this is viewed as a failure to control player conduct on the field. The event in the final kickoff on Saturday wouldn’t suggest otherwise.

Despite committing nine fouls, which is seven fewer than Bournemouth, Chelsea received additional yellow cards for reasons outside fouls as they grew frustration due to their inability to breakdown their host.

The eight yellow cards for Chelsea, shown to players like Robert Sanchez, Marc Cucurella, Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Renato Veiga and substitues Joao Felix and Jadon Sancho, excludes one received by their manager Enzo Maresca.

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola was also in the books alongside six of his players. Adam Smith, Marcos Sinesi, Lewis Cook, Ryan Christie, Antoine Semenyo and Justin Kluivert all went into the Anthony Taylor’s book in an erratic clash at the Vitality.

Tottenham Hotspur were also close to joining the guilty party after recieving five yellow cards in their 1-0 loss to Arsenal in the North London derby. All bookings came in the first-half but they managed to keep their cool after the break and escape a potential punishment.

Possible Penalties Incurred by the FA Sanction

Sanctions typically include fines and, in some cases, warnings about future behavior. The Premier League fines £20- £50 per red card (depending on the offence) and £20 for every 5 yellow cards received by a player.

While Chelsea can ease their mind at the thought of a potential suspension, the team’s poor discipline is becoming alarming as they’ve now picked up 16 Premier League bookings so far in 2024/25, excluding one for manager Enzo Maresca.
