Cristiano Ronaldo leaves behind an extraordinary international legacy, transforming Portugal’s footballing fortunes through record-breaking achievements, historic triumphs and more than two decades of unparalleled service.

Cristiano Ronaldo has finally announced the inevitable. His time with the Portugal national team has come to an end after 23 years of grit, guts and, of course, glory.

While some may regard the absence of a FIFA World Cup winners’ medal among his countless achievements as a flaw, it does little to diminish his case as one of the greatest footballers ever to grace the game.

Indeed, the prospect of winning such a prize was once little more than a distant dream for Portugal, and Ronaldo helped bring that dream closer than ever.

The 41-year-old made more than 10 million people dream, and in the summer of 2016, he took them from imagination to reality, leading Portugal to the European Championship and the first major international trophy in the country’s history.

Thereafter, further triumphs followed in the UEFA Nations League, with victories in 2019 and 2025, while qualification for major international tournaments became a familiar expectation.

Ronaldo also delivered when Portugal’s hopes of reaching the 2014 FIFA World Cup were under serious threat, scoring a memorable hat-trick against Sweden in the decisive play-off second leg to secure their place in Brazil.

His international career belongs in a class of its own.

Few, if any, players have combined individual excellence, longevity and influence on their national team on such a remarkable scale. Goals, appearances, records and countless iconic moments have ensured that his contribution will remain part of football history.

He helped put Portuguese football on the global map, attracting admiration and support well beyond the country’s borders. It is therefore understandable that his departure marks such an emotional moment for the nation, particularly after more than two decades in which the No. 7 shirt became synonymous with his name.

Ronaldo was there when Portugal came agonisingly close to glory, only to suffer a heartbreaking defeat to Greece in the final of Euro 2004. Two years later, he was part of the side that reached the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup in Germany, eventually finishing fourth.

Unfortunately, that remains Portugal’s best World Cup finish during his international career. Yet, across six consecutive editions, from Germany 2006 to North America 2026, he ensured that his country remained a regular presence on football’s biggest stage.

He also made history along the way, becoming the first player to score at six different FIFA World Cups. His 11 goals at the tournament place him among its most prolific goalscorers, while his consistency across the competition’s history is another remarkable achievement.

Since making his major tournament debut at Euro 2004, Ronaldo has remained a constant presence at the highest level of international football. His longevity, particularly in competitions where the margins between success and disappointment are so small, is a testament to his extraordinary dedication.

Cristiano Ronaldo at Portugal: An All-timer with All-time Numbers

Cristiano Ronaldo’s career has undergone a remarkable transformation over the years.

From the electric, goal-shy winger who dazzled defenders with his pace, trickery and dribbling ability to arguably the greatest goalscorer in football history, he gradually moved further forward, eventually becoming the standard by which elite finishing is measured.

After scoring his first international goal against Greece during the opening match of Euro 2004, he finished that calendar year with seven goals for Portugal.

His most prolific year came in 2019, when he found the net 14 times, demonstrating that his appetite for goals had not diminished even after years at the highest level.

Ronaldo remains the all-time leading goalscorer in European Championship history with 14 goals, five more than second-placed Michel Platini, who scored nine. He is also the only player to have scored at five different editions of the competition and holds the record for the most appearances, with 30.

At the FIFA World Cup, his 11 goals place him among the competition’s all-time leading scorers. More importantly, he is the only player to have found the net at six different editions, an achievement that underlines the extraordinary length of his international career.

With 146 goals in 234 appearances, Ronaldo retires as the all-time leading goalscorer in men’s international football, holding both records outright. His contribution extends beyond scoring, having also provided numerous assists and created opportunities for his teammates throughout his career.

Despite the controversies, criticism and occasional disagreements that accompanied his final years with Portugal, it is difficult to identify another player who has enjoyed a comparable international career when individual achievements, longevity, influence and the historical circumstances of his national team are considered together.

The name Cristiano Ronaldo will endure for as long as the Portuguese national team itself. His numbers are extraordinary, but the significance of his contribution goes far beyond the statistics.

He scored 99 more international goals than Pauleta, Portugal’s second-highest goalscorer, and accumulated a record 234 appearances. The distance between Ronaldo and those who follow him is a reflection of just how exceptional his consistency has been.

The numbers are there to do justice to his legacy.

Before Ronaldo, Portugal had never won a major international trophy. The country had enjoyed memorable moments, including a third-place finish at the 1966 World Cup and a semi-final appearance at Euro 2000, but the ultimate prize remained elusive.

In his first major tournament, Euro 2004, Ronaldo helped take Portugal to its first European Championship final. Although they suffered a painful defeat to Greece on home soil, the experience became part of a journey that would eventually lead to something extraordinary.

Twelve years later, Portugal returned to the final, this time against France. Ronaldo’s evening ended prematurely through injury, but he continued to inspire his teammates from the touchline as they secured a historic 1-0 victory after extra time. The heartbreak of 2004 had finally been replaced by the joy of 2016.

And that was not the end. Portugal went on to win the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019, with Ronaldo playing a decisive role, before lifting the trophy again in 2025. His international career had delivered not just one defining moment, but an era of unprecedented success for his country.

The good, the better and the best: Cristiano Ronaldo’s international career with Portugal had it all. From the teenage sensation who announced himself against Greece to the veteran who continued scoring on the world’s biggest stage, his journey was one of constant evolution, extraordinary ambition and historic achievement.

Of course, the absence of a World Cup winners’ medal will remain part of the conversation surrounding his career, especially when mentioned in the company of other greats.

Nevertheless, Portugal never reached the final of the competition with him, and its best finish remained the fourth place achieved in 2006, while all of the other players either represented countries who have won it before, and even after them.

Judging his international legacy solely through that missing achievement would be to overlook everything he accomplished along the way.

For now, Portugal prepares to say goodbye to an icon who carried its name across the world, inspired generations and gave millions reasons to believe. His departure leaves an enormous void, but his influence will remain embedded in the country’s footballing identity.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s time in the national team shirt is over. His story, however, is far from finished.

And when the dust settles on this extraordinary journey, one thing will become even clearer: his legacy will endure as time itself.
