La Liga Coaches are considering going on a strike amidst the growing concerns over the unpaid salaries of fired managers.
On Tuesday, Coaches in the Spanish league convened in Madrid, for the annual meeting organized by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). The discussion for this year’s meeting was centered around the issues regarding the delayed payment for fired coaches.
Several current La Liga coaches have voiced their concerns, with some going as far as suggesting a potential strike if the issue of unpaid salaries is not resolved swiftly. It was raised that while players’ contracts are protected and wages are paid on time, the same cannot be said for coaches, who are often left in financial limbo following their dismissals.
The issue has now reached a tipping point, one that the Spanish Football Coaches Association (AFEF) is stepping in to support the affected individuals. The body has repeatedly called on La Liga and RFEF to address the growing concerns surrounding the financial treatment of coaches, which is a threat to job security.
“Everything went well. Tomorrow (Wednesday) we have an important meeting with La Liga.” Said Real Madrid Coach Carlo Ancelotti upon leaving the venue after the meeting.
The body presented its case to LaLiga and RFEF on Wednesday. Both La Liga and the RFEF are yet to provide a comprehensive response to these demands, though sources suggest that discussions are ongoing behind closed doors.
Should the coaches go on a strike, it would upset the season calendar and probably stretch the season beyond the planned schedule. With the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA club competitions now wearing a new look, the Spanish Football Federation will be desperate to see the rising concerns put to bed.
Many dismissed managers report that they have gone months without receiving their stipends, increasing pressure on the RFEF to find a resolution. The ongoing international break gives them the needed time to try and reach a mutual agreement as the league is on break.
Before the lingering strike becomes inevitable, LaLiga will hope a compromise will be reached. However, the league of manager do appear to be in the driving seat of the negotiation, and meeting their demands will be priority, if the league is to avoid what will be a blemish on the league.
