Xabi Alonso has been confirmed as the new manager of Chelsea on a four-year contract until the summer of 2030. He takes over from Liam Rosenior, who was sacked less than three months into the job.

Chelsea decided to select Xabi Alonso from among the other candidates linked to the role, and the former Real Madrid boss will officially start on July 1 to get preparations underway ahead of next season.

The former Liverpool midfielder arrives in West London with a rich reputation as both a player and a manager having famously dethroned Bayern Munich to win the Bundesliga title in 2023-24 while leading his team, Bayer Leverkusen, to the Europa League final in the same season.

His achievements in Germany secured him a move to Real Madrid at the start of last season. However, after a promising start to his spell, tensions within the squad led to sabotage, and Alonso was let go midway through the campaign.

He has remained on the sidelines since, waiting for an opportunity to return to the dugout.

Following links to his former club Liverpool as a replacement for Arne Slot, it is Chelsea who have ultimately secured his services for the next few years.

Alonso’s move to Chelsea is much more than a mere tactical appointment like their previous coaches; he has been signed specifically as a manager, meaning he will have a significant say in what happens at the club, both on the pitch and beyond.

Chelsea Ready to Heal with Alonso as Manager

The major reason Enzo Maresca is no longer the coach at Chelsea was the hierarchy’s resistance to handing him a managerial role, even though the Italian felt he deserved it due to his achievements in a short period.

Maresca led Chelsea to the Conference League and Club World Cup titles but could not agree with the hierarchy’s direction. A clash over the club’s failure to sign a center-back to replace the injured Levi Colwill played a major part in his decision to leave.

Even though Maresca also had an eye on the Manchester City job, the speculation surrounding his departure became too uncomfortable for both the club and the coach, who had otherwise enjoyed a productive relationship.

When Liam Rosenior arrived a few days later, the club maintained their stance of only appointing a head coach. However, the arrival of Xabi Alonso signals that Chelsea are finally ready to trust someone outside the boardroom.

What Xabi Alonso Brings to Chelsea?

Much of Xabi Alonso’s football philosophy was on display with his previous teams, Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid, but his Chelsea team could look more like the former than the latter.

At Bayer Leverkusen, the former Spanish international played with a back three and utilized wing-backs, with the duo of Jeremie Frimpong and Alejandro Grimaldo becoming highly celebrated for their attacking productivity.

Alonso favored two holding midfielders and two number 10s behind a lone striker, a style that perfectly suits Chelsea’s current crop of midfielders in both tactics and depth, featuring top talents like Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Romeo Lavia, Andrey Santos, and Dario Essugo.

Conversely, at Real Madrid, he was forced to utilize a back four, though he may have been left with little choice given the lack of options in the center-back department. At Chelsea though, it will quickly become glaring which style he truly favors.

Top clubs are not typically known to favor playing a back three, especially in the Premier League where it rarely succeeds, as evident from Ruben Amorim’s failure to crack it at Manchester United due to his reliance on the 3-4-1.

This remains a major concern regarding Xabi Alonso’s appointment, but his ability to show tactical flexibility at Real Madrid before things went south must have reassured the Stamford Bridge landlords before committing their future into his hands.

The Biggest Winners of Alonso’s Arrival

Xabi Alonso’s arrival will be excellent news for several Chelsea stars given how he elevated players of similar profiles at his previous clubs.

The Wing-Backs

If the Spaniard deploys his trademark back-three system, the right wing-back role becomes a goldmine.

Reece James and Malo Gusto.

Reece James’s elite crossing and physical presence will be key, while Malo Gusto’s dynamic running power perfectly suits the high-intensity transitions required out wide.

Both players could also be fielded simultaneously, with James stepping into the right side of the back three while the Frenchman plays just ahead of him as the wing-back.

It is a similar story on the opposite flank, where Marc Cucurella loves to roam the final third and will receive more license to do so under Alonso, who will look to deploy him on the flank when playing a back three.

Pedro Neto could also step into a wing-back role due to his tireless running and tenacity to cover ground and press opponents.

The Midfield Pivot and Number 10s

As one of the greatest deep-lying playmakers in football history, Alonso builds his teams around technical, high-IQ central midfielders who can dictate tempo, bypass presses, and switch play seamlessly.

The partnership of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez in midfield could return and look even better under the former Liverpool midfielder.

Xabi Alonso’s arrival could benefit Chelsea’s midfielders more.

Enzo possesses the vision and long-range passing radius to emulate the quarterback role Alonso himself played (and later coached through Granit Xhaka), while Caicedo’s elite ball-winning and lateral coverage provide the perfect defensive security.

His 3-4-2-1 shape utilizes two attacking midfielders operating in the half-spaces behind a lone striker, giving them the freedom to drift inside, create overloads, and thread through-balls.

Operating as one of these twin number tens, Cole Palmer will have total license to drift between the lines, combine with overlapping wing-backs, and utilize his world-class vision within highly structured attacking patterns.

Enzo Fernandez could also be pushed higher up to accompany him, leaving one of Andrey Santos, Romeo Lavia, or Dario Essugo to partner Moises Caicedo in the deeper midfield pivot.

The Biggest Losers

Conversely, Xabi Alonso’s arrival could spell the end for Alejandro Garnacho and other traditional wingers at Chelsea, because his style neither brings the best out of them nor provides the platform they need to thrive.

Alejandro Garnacho and Pedro Neto.

Attackers are rarely comfortable when tasked with heavy defensive duties, but under Alonso, it becomes a primary requirement; only the striker and the two number 10s, to certain extent, are exempt from these burdens.

Conclusion

The appointment of Xabi Alonso marks a defining transition in Chelsea’s approach, signaling a rare moment where the boardroom has ceded control to a true manager rather than a restricted head coach.

By handing Alonso a deal until 2030, the hierarchy is betting heavily on the tactical vision that dismantled Bayern’s dominance in the Bundesliga, trusting his capacity to adapt to the demanding nature of the Premier League.

If Alonso successfully implements his structured, high-intensity system, Chelsea’s technical core, spearheaded by a revitalized midfield pivot and explosive wingbacks, will see many of the current squad play a significant part.

Xabi Alonso.

However, his philosophy is uncompromising; for traditional wingers and attackers resistant to defensive responsibilities, this new era demands rapid adaptation (like Pedro Neto) or a swift exit (like Alejandro Garnacho).

Chelsea have finally looked beyond short-term fixes, securing an elite manager with a definitive blueprint to build a sustainable powerhouse at Stamford Bridge. It will be fascinating to see if Xabi Alonso can turn this vision into a definitive success.
